Exploration of the brick facades of the castle as artistic research on its travelling windows.

The outer brick facades of castle De Cannenburgh show many traces that consist of different types of bricks. In fact, they are traces of windows: during the five centuries of existence, many owners have succeeded each other. Their different tastes and opinions about architecture made the windows slide to a new place in the wall. Some of the windows disappeared and never came back. In order to follow the journey of the windows I scanned the brick facades and collected the traces of these windows. I collected 12 traces, of which these are a selection:

 

 

 

 

As a respons to the disappearance of three of the windows, I made their traces continue their journey into the water by a temporary installation of white 1:1 models of the traces.
Their surfaces were installed under water just below the water level.

 

Once installed in the water, the white shapes reveiled the yellow colour of this water, caused by iron-oxides (aq).

 

After some time, a black layer of mud that was pushed up by fish made the traces disappear just like the original windows.
