Metaphorically Speaking
Galleries and museum rooms are totally brought back to zero between every exhibition and usually do not show any traces of the past exhibitions. Invited by artists initiative Circa…Dit to create a collateral exhibition for Sonsbeek 2016, I developed a curatorial concept that would treat the project space as an urban site: urban sites are in continuous transition, causing time layers to be built on each other.

I invited three other artists to create site-specific and room filling installations, in which the next installation would be built over and with the former. After the third installation, I performed an archeological investigation and then made a final installation that would intertwine every time-layer into a new composition.

I also asked the participating artists to choose an urban environment and to monitor its transformations. The photographs were published on the project website and in the publication.

In public debates we discussed the meaning of intertwining time layers for art, authorship and for urban environments. As the venue of Circa…Dit was located near De Blauwe Golven by Peter Struycken, a public debate about the overwriting of this public art piece by a new spatial design was held here as a final case of Metaphorically Speaking and the start of a public discussion about preserving the Blauwe Golven by adjusting it to the future spatial design.
