The Stingerbol
Originally, the Stingerbol was built as a projection dome for training soldiers the FIM-92-Stinger, a man-portable air defense system that operates as an infrared homing surface-to-air missile. Virtual aircrafts were projected on the inner walls of the dome and with game-like guns, soldiers practiced shooting these aircrafts. It was built in 1991 and abandoned around 1998. It did not serve any new function since then.

The first time I came across this object was in 2012 when I was doing research on this military zone in Ede. In that year, this zone was still surrounded by fences as it was not yet a public space. The door of the Stingerbol was open and I walked in to find it empty and abandoned and to discover the mesmerizing echo and reverb as essential characteristics of this space. Outside I considered this object as a huge abstract sculpture, an icon for this site, with an aesthetic value independent of any future use or exploitation. Shortly after this first encounter, the fences around the site were opened as the site was to be transformed into a living area and the door was locked and obstructed. When I came to live and work near this site in 2018, I got to visit the object as often as I want to. Everytime I do so, the object reveals something new about itself. I have collected the knowledge I found here in two works: Stingerbol Observations and Stingerbol Recordings.

Artists’ book: Stingerbol Observations
2019
Hand bound book, unicum, C-prints, laserjet prints and handwritings on paper, 30 x 23 x 3 cm
In this book I collected all my observations and arranged them into a sequence. Binding them into a book reveals the connections between the observations. They become found narratives which conclude into a dream for the future of this building. As a book, the collected observations provide the source for my artist-led walks in which I share my observations with my participants. Fragments from this book are used for the multiple edition (see below).

Sonic performance: Stingerbol Recordings
2019
Lossless .wav-file, 10 minutes 20 seconds
In collaboration with Studio AVM

The Stingerbol Recordings are registrations of my performative exploration of the interior space, which I explored by beating with a felt mallet drum-stick and a metal brush-stroke. Also part of the performance is slowly opening and closing the doors of a steel closet and reading aloud words I found inside the building on machines and old newspapers. As every sound was made by objects, texts and materials I found inside, the performance provides a sonic documentation of the interior space. I recorded my presence as well as my absence, during which the Stingerbol would still make sounds by expanding in case of sunshine and vibrations in case of a train passing by. So, me and the building were both performers during these audio recordings. The sounds were recorded by binaural techniques in order to record the varying positions I would take inside this space while walking and moving. No sound was generated or manipulated digitally: every sound effect was created by the Stingerbol itself. The performance should and will be done again live if audience will be permitted inside the Stingerbol, which is not the case today because of safety reasons.

As silence is equally important as noise, this soundtrack can best be experienced in a silent room and with ear-covering headphones at sufficient audio volume.
