Once upon a time

2016
Temporary installation in a barley field near Diepenveen; 1750 bamboo sticks and ink
30 x 30 x 1 m

Commissioned by Kunstenlab and in collaboration with BPD

2016 was to be the last year that this site was used as a barley field. After the harvest, the site was transformed into a construction site where a new village was to be built. The piece critically points to the fictional history of the not yet existing new village. The narratives of this history were made up by the architect of the village, for marketing purposes, in order to provide the village with an identity. In one of these fictional narratives, the disappearance of a huge square tower is suggested on this site. However fictitious, the installation refers to real archaeological sites, where grass grows poorly where ruins lie beneath.
