Strata (copy) - performance

In 2014 I was invited by Ronald de Ceuster to participate in Borrowed Spaces. This project was a growing collection of site-specific interventions in a former primary school in Deventer, performed by visual artists.

My intervention was a respons to eight pink squares on the wall. These squares were traces of the paintings that used to hang here. When redecorating the space, the new lighter color was painted around the paintings. When te school was closed, the paintings were removed, which revealed the old pink colour in eight squares. My intervention was aimed at reactivating these voids, which marked a disappearance of artworks.

I took a toy watering gun filled with ink and I shot every pink square, trying to create eight same ink marks. Obviously this attempt failed.

As the owner was not happy with the ink marks, the wall was later painted over again. All of the ink was painted over…but the pink squares were reconstructed. This reappearance of the squares urged Ronald to invite me to also repeat my ink blasts.

On Sunday March 24th I will copy my intervention as a performance. Again I will try to make eight similar ink marks and I will also try to make them similar as those I made ten years ago. And again I know I will fail again.
