Galerie Wit / Art Amsterdam 2010

With thanks to: RAI Amsterdam/ Art Amsterdam / Edo Dijksterhuis for permission to shoot this footage.

Art fairs like Art Amsterdam are very temporary architectural interventions that divide a big space into many small spaces. Despite their short existence, these spaces do undergo several transformations: walls of plywood are being built and then painted white. From this point, they change from abstract, anonymous structures into figurative, specific sites as they are adjusted all differently by the galleries that move into it. These galleries subsequently fill the spaces with art pieces. The opening of the fair takes place shortly after the installation of the works, and from then is crowded with masses of people.

When invited to participate in Art Amsterdam, I wished to experience the absence of all of this during the hours before the transformation of the white spaces into gallery booths. This absence appeared to exist only during the night after building the walls and before the arrival of the galleries. I arranged permission to enter the art fair venue and explore this site during dawn, between 04:00 and 06:00 A.M. In these hours I observed a silent conversation between the spaces that would become the gallery booths.

Stray Conversations is a video composed of the footage I shot during my exploration. The footage was roughly edited and shown immediately in the booth of one of the participating galleries (Galerie Wit). Most of the viewers and gallerists did not recognize the spaces in de video and suggested that I filmed a model.
