Ter Observatie

2014

Ter Observatie was a research project in which I documented the transformations inside an academic hospital during its renovation. These transformations were hidden behind fences so that visitors would not see the broken status of the rooms that were being renovated. Comparing this status of the building with that of the patients in this hospital, who (also) undergo surgery and other treatments in order to heal, I noticed that the vulnerability of both is usually hidden. This is why I started to explore the hospital on a regular base, as a metaphor for visiting a patient, and document the surprising and inspiring moments that would occur during its ‘healing’ process. My observations of temporary vulnerability, uselessness and architectural wounds were discussed with doctors and other employees and ultimately resulted in a series of printed photographs which would become part of the art collection of the hospital.
