Loowaard, Loo, Duiven.
De dorpsraad van Loo wilde een uitkijktoren laten bouwen die zou verwijzen naar de geschiedenis van het Romeinse castellum in de Loowaard. Traditioneel worden uitkijktorens die verwijzen naar de Romeinen ontworpen als de bekende vierkante Romeinse uitkijktorens. Ik vond deze uitkijktorens architectonisch niet zo interessant. Daarom heb ik me laten inspireren door een ter plaatse gevonden fibula: een Romeinse kledingspeld. Deze is gevonden door een lokale archeoloog en maakt deel uit van de collectie van Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. De fibula leerde mij dat de Romeinen, in tegenstelling tot hun uitkijktorens, ook heel delicaat en verfijnd konden ontwerpen. Als reactie hierop heb ik het kleine sieraad uitvergroot en omgevormd tot een plek waar mensen in kunnen lopen en het landschap kunnen observeren. In de uitkijktoren is op elk van de zes balkons een QR-code aangebracht die leidt naar audioverhalen over het betreffende uitzicht. Deze verhalen heb ik verzameld door kinderen, boeren, arbeiders, een wetenschapper, een archeoloog en (andere) bewoners van Loo te interviewen. De Romeinse geschiedenis is op deze manier verbonden met ecologische, landschappelijke, landelijke, industriële, middeleeuwse en hedendaagse verhalen.
The village council of Loo wanted to have a watchtower built that would refer to the history of the Roman castellum in the Loowaard. Traditionally, watchtowers that refer to the Romans are designed as the well-known square Roman watchtowers. I did not find these watchtowers architecturally very interesting. That is why I chose to be inspired by a fibula found on site: a Roman clothing pin. It was found by a local archaeologist and is part of the collection of the Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen. The fibula taught me that the Romans, in contrast to their watchtowers, could also design very delicately and refined. In response, I transformed the small piece of jewelry into a place where people can walk in and observe the landscape. Inside the watchtower, each of the six balconies has a QR code that leads to audio stories about the view in question. I collected these stories by interviewing children, farmers, workers, a scientist, an archaeologist and (other) residents in Loo. Roman history is thus linked to ecological, landscape, rural, industrial, medieval and contemporary stories.
