Void Ratio

Tijdens een verblijf in Düsseldorf vulden Ronald de Ceuster en ik de ruimtes van de galerie met tijdelijke kunstwerken die door hun materialen, vormen en installatie ook de lege ruimte rondom activeerden. Void Ratio is in de bodemkunde de verhouding (e) tussen het volume aan leegtes (water, lucht) in een bodem (Vv) en het volume aan vaste stoffen in dezelfde bodem (Vs): e = Vv/Vs. De bodem is verzadigd als de Void Ratio 1 is en zou helemaal versteend zijn als de waarde 0 was, een waarde die in de praktijk niet wordt bereikt. Je zou deze maat misschien ook op een ruimte kunnen projecteren. Dan zegt Void Ratio iets over de volume aan leegte in de ruimte ten opzichte van het volume aan tastbare zaken. Toegepast op de stad zegt Void Ratio iets over het aantal leegstaande panden en het aantal ‘gevulde’ panden.
During a stay in Düsseldorf, Ronald de Ceuster and I filled the spaces of the gallery with temporary works of art that, through their materials, shapes and installation, also activated the empty space around them. In soil science, Void Ratio is the ratio (e) between the volume of voids (water, air) in a soil (Vv) and the volume of solids in the same soil (Vs): e = Vv/Vs. The soil is saturated if the Void Ratio is 1 and would be completely petrified if the value were 0, a value that is not achieved in practice. You could perhaps also project this measure onto a space. Then Void Ratio says something about the volume of emptiness in the space compared to the volume of tangible things. Applied to the city, Void Ratio says something about the number of vacant buildings and the number of ‘filled’ buildings.
