Spectrum Molenkom

Residents of the Molenkom area, Arnhem, Biënnale Gelderland.
De Molenkom in Arnhem bestaat voornamelijk uit sociale huurwoningen, die eind jaren ’70 werden gebouwd. De wijk staat bekend als grauw gebied omdat de publieke ruimte vrijwel geheel uit steen en beton is gebouwd. Maar binnenshuis blijken de inwoners zelf juist heel kleurrijk. Hun interieurs weerspiegelen hun culturele identiteit en karakter en vormden daarmee een contrast met de anonieme publieke ruimte. Om de betekenis van kleuren voor deze inwoners verder te onderzoeken, organiseerde ik een bijeenkomst op straat waarbij we vele kleuren bespraken. Aan het einde van deze bespreking van kleuren nodigde ik de deelnemers uit om kleuren te kiezen voor de donkerste en stilste plekken in de publieke ruimte. De vorm en installatie koos ik zelf, als reactie op de plek waar de kleur zou komen.

Molenkom is a social housing neighbourhood in Arnhem which was built in the late ’70’s of past century. It is known as a grey area because its public space is built of stone. Yet it houses colourfull people: during my project I visited many of them and however anonymous the public space, their living rooms are each personal expressions of cultural identities. To further explore the meaning of colours for these inhabitants I organised a meeting on the street in which we discussed many colours. As a conclusion, I invited the participants to select colours for a temporary installation. The colours were installed site-responsively on the darkest and most silent locations.
