Hof Van HolLand Art was a five-years public space art project commissioned bij Gemeente Nijmegen on various locations in and around Lent. The art project should reflect on the history of the site and the future transformations it will undergo. I was invited to make a design for Fort Beneden Lent.

Fort Beneden Lent was built in 1862 along the Waal to defend Nijmegen. The site originally consisted of a bombproof bunker for soldiers and ammunition storage and a fort guard house. Both objects are situated on a site enclosed by a fort wall and a moat. In 1944 the fort was one of the locations where fighting took place during the liberation. Around 1974 the fort was squatted by students, who would live there for 40 years as a small and largely self-sufficient community. It is thanks to them that the buildings of this national monument were still somewhat maintained. My interview with these squatters largely informed my proposal.

The project consists of two interventions:

1. Making the site as empty as possible, by removing sheds, cars and other non-original, waisted objects, but saving the trees, which were planted at special life-events of the squatters.

2. An installation of stacks of boxes, that conceptually form a bridge between the old ammunition boxes and the arrival of new residents in and around the fort. These boxes will whitness the transformations of this site and its’ surroundings.

Het eenvoudig weg vrijmaken van de contour van het pand door het weghalen van alle ruis die zich daar momenteel bevindt, zal op zich al een indrukwekkend monumentaal beeld opleveren. Dat de kunstenaar hier oog voor heeft wordt door de jury bijzonder gewaardeerd. Zowel de historische als beeldende betekenis van het gebouw worden op deze eenvoudige manier krachtig aangescherpt. Een strakke, goed onderhouden graszode rond het bouwwerk zal duidelijk contrasteren met de hogere begroeiing (hoog gras, struikgewas en bomen) en zodoende fungeren als een omlijsting. Het zal de aandacht voor het historisch monument met zijn complexe geschiedenis accentueren. Daarbij kunnen de grote sculpturale blokken de monumentale werking van deze bijzondere plek nog verder versterken.”
