Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het gebouw waar ik deze installatie maakte op een traditionele Veluwse boerderij, en dat was ook precies de bedoeling toen de Duitsers in de Tweede Wereldoorlog de Zeven Provinciën bouwden: zeven bunkers op de militaire vliegbasis Deelen, waar Luftwaffe-personeel werd gehuisvest. Na de oorlog werd het door het Nederlandse leger gebruikt tot het einde van de Koude Oorlog. Daarna stonden de bunkerboerderijen leeg. Om kraken te voorkomen, werden alle ramen dichtgemaakt met houten platen.
Toen ik hier 25 jaar later een installatie ging maken, zette ik de ramen weer open en activeerde ze met zwarte boomstammen, die van buiten naar binnen liepen. Voor het eerst kwamen er weer licht, wind en regen de kamers binnen.
At first sight, the building where I made this installation resembles a traditional Veluwe farm, and that was precisely the intention when the Germans built the Seven Provinces in the Second World War: bunkers at the military air base Deelen, in which Luftwaffe personnel was housed. After the war, the Dutch army used it until the end of the Cold War. After that, the bunker farms were empty. To prevent squatting, all windows were closed with wooden plates.
When I started making an installation here 25 years later, I opened the windows again and re-activated them with black tree trunks, which ran from the outside in. For the first time light, wind and rain entered the rooms again.
